I was born in Sydney in 1979, at 28 weeks, weighing exactly 1kg. At the time my parents and brother were not given much hope, and I was baptised as an emergency at 24 hours old.
Birth, NICU Stay, Homecoming
Over the next 3 months, I was in a humidicrib and had several severe issues including both lungs collapsing. I received multiple blood transfusions, and have been left with scars from these and the lung drains, as well as the back of both hands from needle insertion.
Until about 2 years of age, I had persistent health issues, and was always small for my age.
I learnt to read before I could walk, and started to walk at just over two.
I am now 31, and as far as I know I have no lasting issues as a result of my premature birth. I still prefer to read than to run, and am halfway through a university degree, having spent some time travelling up until now.
I just wanted people to hear it from the other end
- Keep your hope - your baby needs that.
