Collapsed lungs are a common health problem in the NICU, especially in premature babies. Most collapsed lungs are mild - they have few symptoms and don't require treatment. Some collapsed lungs can be severe, causing respiratory distress and requiring emergency treatment. The two main types of collapsed lungs in the NICU are atelectasis and pneumothorax.
